An account of a series of walks and rambles in Scotland in the 1990s; from one-day walks to adventures over many days and many miles. Along the way we look at poor service in the Highlands, sup lots of ale in pubs, and take a peek at England where we check out that quaint Lakeland custom of allowing the dog to pee in your hat.
A Walk With Elves eBook Edward Burns
I loved this book! The writer takes the reader on a lovely journey through Scotland by foot. He describes all the scenery and makes one feel like they are right there with him. Being an American, I had a little trouble with some of his Scottish slang, but his writing is clear enough that I was able to make out his meaning, if not the actual definition. For example, it sounds like a 'sod' is someone who is a real jerk. :) I also had no idea about most of the places he talked about, but I had fun, Googling maps of Scotland and looking these places up. He threw in a little history of the places he visited and I appreciated that. It's very fun for me to hear some of these stories.Ed has a wonderful, self-deprecating sense of humor and has no problem telling the reader about the funny situations he got himself into, like slipping on a pile of horse manure. I found myself chuckling out loud at some of his antics. He makes himself out to be a stodgy, old coot, but he has more in common with more people than he realizes and that comes through in his writing. (Ed, you're not the only person who hates talking to people first thing in the morning!)
The writing is very clear (except for the Scottish Brogue) and is error-free, which is a wonderful happenstance these days. I am sad to have finished this book and won't be listening to more of his stories each night at bedtime. However, if Ed writes another book, I'm buying it!
I highly suggest you purchase this book - I think you'll really enjoy it. It's got travel, humor and human nature. What more could you want? I'm sure anyone who has lived in or visited Scotland will really get a kick out of it.

A Walk With Elves eBook Edward Burns Reviews
I love it, such humour. Reminds me of Bill Bryson only better. Make me want to explore some of the places mentioned in this book, or maybe not.
I have traveled in Scotland and wanted to read about real hikes versus tourist, this book filled this desire, the only drawback for me was the taking of God's name in vain several times and his obsession with his own bodily functions. Was not totally offensive but repeated often. Overall, a good read, especially if you want view of true Scotland.
